After having beaten the party up from pillar to post for the last 8 weeks, they are finally approaching 2nd level, and are having second thoughts about entering any form of violent combat for fear of critical hits.

I have actually been really mean to them, but given them a break once (when the dice result was too severe), but they have suffered some very severe breaks of their own.
