Review - Clash of Wills for the Vampire The Dark Ages Horror RPG

Billed as a Dark Ages Vampire Starting Adventure to inspire any new or existing game group, this 40 page softcover book is set in the Midlands of England with the Vampires working for Mithras, Prince of London attempting to convince a dying Lord to leave his lands and property to Mithras, rather than the Brujah of the region.

As with most of the White Wolf role-playing “horror” games, I’ve always found them to be fascinating to read, but am always left wondering what the hell am I going to do with this? I have had extensive experience and interest in running historical games as well as Werewolf:The Apocalypse, so I knew the rules and can handle big, effective characters. But this little adventure should have been something special, a springboard to other great things, but despite an open ended system of encounters, with many lead ins and a couple of lead outs, and optional encounters, its essentially a rail-roaded adventure with little real flair or feeling for the setting. It does provide opportunities to take the adventure beyond the setting, but these are no more than sentences at the end campaign book rather than fleshed out stories and adventures, and certainly not a springboard to a campaign. It does, for example, hint that the heroes could follow the Brujah back to the midlands but there is nothing more written on the subject or the setting in any of the Dark Ages publications.

Another feature of the adventure is that it is meant for new and inexperienced storytellers, but instead of helping out as a good introductory adventure should, it instead becomes a burden upon the storyteller to keep track of half a dozen NPCs and their motivations and opinions of each of the players. Whilst this may be the de-facto in every Vampire game, to push this straight onto a new storyteller without some advice on handling this aspect now and in the future is a little disappointing. A simple introduction of a chart, table or form to assist the storyteller in deciding how each of the NPCs react to the players, and how those reactions change over the period of the adventure would be immensely helpful. If I ran the game again I would do this as it eliminates a lot of the social book-keeping that is required of a Vampire game.

Essentially this scenario is a series of six medium-sized encounters which the characters have a surprising amount of control over. Whilst this is a good thing from the players view, it can wreck the game in minutes, and therefore fails as an intro-game for new players and especially new storytellers. All the encounters bar one is negotiation. One good thing is that the game allows immense room for the storyteller to add lots of extra encounters and details, which I did, but again I’m viewing this game from the point of view of a new storyteller. One throwaway character/encounter became a hook/liability for the players. Instead of slaughtering a young family, they instead took pity and preserved the life of the young children (with a decent church education) whilst allowing the parents to fall foul of a hideous disease ruining the county.

Each of the six encounters is prefaced by a “how we got here” intro, as the unfolding of events can be different. Allies can be enemies.

1 Meeting with Mithras’ agent in London and travel to Midlands
2 Arrival on the outskirts, the village and meeting with Jillian and her brothers
3 Arrival at the castle
4 First night
5 Second night
6 End fight at the Abbey

We managed to complete the game in two sessions of three to four hours each. The book is priced a bit too high considering the value, as apart from the castle layouts there is little reason to return to this book once finished.

2012 Gaming

Our group has been on a hiatus seeing as my wife's have birth to daughter no3 over the Christmas holiday, and I've been itching to get back.

Right now we have 2 big games that are underway, our Dark Heresy campaign which is close to finishing as well as my Vampire Dark Ages campaign.

DH is being run by our resident blood thirsty history teacher and V TDA is being run by myself.

Vampire in the Wings?

No game this week, as previously mentioned, but we did have a summer jolly last night (Saturday) and got drunk to the early hours on the morning in our cowboy and indian themed party.

During the drunk preceedings we think we maybe have recruited a new player with the lure that we dont just play fantasy and science fiction, but horror games like Vampire.

Oddly enough I passed it off as drunk ramblings, but today I have received 2 phone calls from people saying they want in on a Vampire game. Who am I to disappoint, but there is the small matter of MERP to finish first.

Life after MERP

So whats next on the GM front?

Well, we have L5R all ready from our other GM, which I believe is going to be a double barrel campaign, i.e. he is going to be combining 2 adventures into 1.

This suits me fine as it gives me more time to canvas for whats next and give me time to develop some ideas.

Off the top of my head;

Werewolf: Dark Ages - I need to finish off the 3rd part in my time-travelling trilogy.

MERP - I'm sure the guys wont let this game disappear, as they all seem to be having a blast.

Deadlands - this one kinda died because of 2 players who didnt like the system or the world. Of the remaining players, they all loved it. Of the 2 players who didnt like the game, 1 has left and the other is an infrequent attendee.

And as for new games, well there is Hollow Earth Expedition a pulpy action game that manages to merge every element of the genre I love. And then there is the very new Starblazers RPG, a space opera RPG I have been anticipating for a year or so now.

I am sure there are others, like RuneQuest, a game I had prepared before MERP took over, that Id like to run, say a Big Rubble/Pavis game.

L5R - Whats Next

Seeing as its not me who is running Legend of the Five Rings, it does give me a chance to reflect and get ready for next games to come.

I have the desire to finish the Freeport Trilogy as it has an ending worthy of the effort - even if the group are heading in the wrong direction.

But as to what comes next, well thats an open book as far as I am concerned, but I do have a few "pages" bookmarked.

Firstly, Serenity. I really would like another player or 2 to join in the boost up the crew numbers. There is a story to tell and I suppose Id be happy to finish that off with the current group, but I doubt I'll continue as part of the success of the game is the dynamics of the group.
Here are a few of the other games that I have chosen to run, and curious to know what other people think of whats on offer.
Werewolf: The Dark Ages - yes I know I said Id never run this 3rd part, but I find the idea alluring still to run a game set in the dark ages. Not because the skies were black, but rather the period of history where we know so little of the occurings.
Twilight 2000 - there are enough military and gun nuts in the group that this could be fun, I think having grown up in the 80s, calling myself a child of the bomb, its fair to say I'd like to run a game set in the era (which is now history rather than the future.)
Engel - angels and demons in a devastated future, I've wanted to run this the moment I heard about the game, let alone actually now owning it. I am not 100% sure Ill run it as a D20 game or use the Arcana system which is available online
Orpheus - a role-playing game about a ghostly detective agency, limited short run campaign written by White Wolf
Deadlands - carrying on from where we left off

I have a few one-shots lying around that might be interesting;

Judge Dredd - the original Games Workshop flawed edition
Paranoia - the new XP edition
&

Warhammer 40,000 RPG Demo Adventure - we are all fans of the WHFRP game, and this should just be a perfect extension of the game. I loved Fading Suns RPG, and this game will be even bleaker than that little effort.
